Connected notes

One idea, many connections

A short note can hold one idea and point to other notes that give it context. Stable links let a collection grow without forcing every thought into a single sequence. This card collection applies that approach to my practice. A role can connect to a technology, a talk, or a current question, with a reason for following each connection.

Connected notes are the method and the material; the connectome is the map that emerges from them. Each card is one focused note with its local context. The connectome looks across the whole collection and makes the larger pattern navigable as a network and grouped directory.

The cards are ordinary Markdown documents in a Jekyll collection. Front matter records each card’s stable slug, title, category, sources, and explained links. A full build validates those relationships and derives incoming links, while explicit permalinks keep public addresses stable when a title changes.

What “atomic” means here

Atomic does not mean tiny. It means a card has one centre of gravity: one claim, idea, experience, question, or reusable explanation that can be understood and linked independently. A card can still contain context, examples, and qualifications when they serve that centre.

When one card contains several ideas that would be useful on their own, splitting can make each idea easier to reuse and connect. When two cards repeat the same idea, merging can reduce ambiguity. Related but distinct ideas should remain separate and link to each other. The decision is editorial, so tools can highlight opportunities without silently performing the rewrite.
